The Enchantment of Echo

This is a site specific work installed at IADT, Dublin on Monday 10 November for assessment 1 of BA Hons programme. The work comprises 2 sinks of an on-site kitchen unit 1/2 filled with coloured water. In 1 sink a tap drips. The sound describes in acoustic terms the shape of the room and the materials used in the buildings walls and floor. The piece is also a meditation of the relationship between hearing and seeing, audio and visual perception.

Flicker movie

The earliest work that looks at relationship between sound and image in cinema. Allowing sound  to direct the image, a dripping tap provides motion on the water to create a flicker film shown in the pieces of mirror.

Composition using Air and Water Displacement

The most remarkable thing about hearing is that the process is entirely mechanical. The eardrum vibrates in response to pressure. This work exploits the fact. The stethoscope increases the tension between the eardrum and surrounding air. Water is used to block and unblock airflow creating a tapping effect on the eardrum.

Duration

The tuning fork is rapped and held at one end of the wood while the listener places their ear against the other end. As the sound dissipates and becomes inaudible the listener is drawn to the fact that the perception of sound is inseparable from the perception of time.
