The most remarkable thing about hearing is that the process is entirely mechanical. The eardrum vibrates in response to pressure. This work exploits the fact. The stethoscope increases the tension between the eardrum and surrounding air. Water is used to block and unblock airflow creating a tapping effect on the eardrum.
